IWC OPEN MIC

Our Open Mic and Open Slams are a staple of Inspired Word Café, well beloved and attended by many of the creative writing community in Kelowna. Come by BNA Burger (in the BNA tasting room at 1254 Ellis Street) at 7:00 pm on the first Thursday of the month to hear what local poets, musicians, and other writers have to offer! Plus, stay for the second half for our Open Slam, with some healthy competition, heckling judges, and cash prizes!

Many events are livestreamed on our Youtube page for free (with a suggested donation) so if you can’t make it in person, you can still watch from the comfort of your home.

BNA Burger offers a minor-friendly environment, with both food and drink served during our events. The space is wheelchair accessible and offers single user, gender neutral washrooms.

The season runs from September to April, and sometimes includes a special reading event and interview instead of an Open Slam. Keep your eyes peeled for those special events!

Doors and sign ups both open at 6:30pm. There is a $6-$10 sliding scale entry. Sign ups are first come, first served, and in high demand—so if you want to read, make sure to mark your calendars!

IWC WRITING WORKSHOP

Our writing workshop is a fabulous way to connect with writers of all experience levels, and an opportunity to share your work with peers! This event is free and all ages. Workshops are hosted in the Alternator Centre.

This workshop invites writers at all stages to engage in a learning and sharing environment. There will be a workshop leader to guide you through the process, so no prior experience is necessary. Please bring 10 copies of the same one poem or one piece of prose (a completed story or an excerpt), to have reviewed by an inclusive and positive group of fellow writers. The maximum length should be 2 pages. We have 10 spots available for each workshop. Each writer will have the chance to share their work, hear a robust discussion of how the work is succeeding or needs more development, and share their own impressions of others’ work.

The Alternator Centre is located in the Rotary Centre for the Arts and is wheelchair accessible. Bathrooms are gendered stalled washrooms, with a single, gender neutral and wheelchair accessible washroom available

The season runs from September to April. Attendance for our workshops is on a first come, first served basis, so if you want a chance to share your work and read others’ writing, make sure to mark your calendars!
