yoothspohk
yoothspohk is a youth literary arts and spoken word poetry education program that serves students in school districts 23 (Central Okanagan), 93 (Conseil scolaire francophone de la Colombie-Britannique), and on the Okanagan Indian Reserve #1 (Penticton).
This program began as a way to connect Okanagan youth during the disconnection of the Covid-19 pandemic, and aimed to do so by fostering skills and knowledge in contemporary literary arts and spoken word poetry. Through classroom workshops delivered by local artists, syilx storytellers, musicians, poets, and performers, students learn a variety of skills, including introduction to spoken word poetry, performance techniques, and how to be a respectful audience member. Students have the opportunity to learn from professional artists, working both collaboratively and independently, and will have created new and unique writing by the end of their program.
Each class that participates in the program receives a free pizza party and performance day to both encourage community youth sharing and empowerment and to deepen their sense of belonging within their peer groups. These events are always a great time!
