Back Door Winery

Rawle first connected with this Summerland based winery and man I have to be honest, its challenging not to make a million inappropriate jokes inspired by their name. But I will behave because this lovely, intimate winery has offered up bottles of wine for all of the poets competing on January 27th. We strive to always pay our poets, but in lieu of this possibility, having community partners who can say thank you in other ways is a wonderful gift. Check out the amazing winery and get out of Kelowna to show your support and love for Team Shelbyville by repping this Summerland winery.

Arts Council of the Central Okanagan

Katie Brennan is a fantastic visual artist, friend of IWC, and President of the Arts Council for the Central Okanagan. When she came to IWC and said "Let's do something sweet together!" we could not turn her down. Without the generous support of ARTSCo, the madness of Springfield vs. Shelbyville would not be possible. Check out all the work they are up to around the Okanagan Valley and don't forget to nominate your favourite artists for the 10th Annual Okanagan Arts Awards in May.

Inspirational qoute of the week with Jessica Laplante

"Repressed emotions are un-actualized spiritual lessons---if we cannot excavate and work through our feelings, we will be limited in our expansion." -JEFF BROWN

With every experience we have in life, it evokes a emotional response. Some of those life experiences are here to teach us lessons. When one experiences negative emotions whatever it may be... loss, disappointment, hurt, anger etc Do you bottle it up, shove it down, ignore it, turn away from it, hide it or avoid it through self sabotaging means? When one represses their feelings be it hurt, anger, disappointment etc. We are not giving ourselves the opportunity to truly feel and process whatever it is. Each experience be it positive or negative has lessons in it ready to be learned if we are courageous enough to feel our feelings, express them through some sort of healthy outlet and brave enough to walk through the scary doors of life. Once one can do this they may discover aspects about themselves they never saw before, they may recognize how they contribute to their experiences or ways to heal themselves if they allow themselves to feel and learn from each experience life beholds.

Kelowna Poetry Slam - Kickoff Classic - Meet the Poets

Andrew Brown

Andrew is a high school English teacher who is a newcomer to the slam scene. He wrote his first spoken word poem 3 years ago (and has since been a huge fan of the medium), in his first year of teaching, when teaching spoken word poetry for the first time. Being a hip hop fan for most of his life, Andrew started writing lyrics at this same time and recorded his first song that year. Social justice, being a teacher, growing as a father and husband and hip hop are what inspire him to write.

Come find Andrew and cheer him on during our Kickoff Classic at The Well Pub, September 8th from 7-9pm. Tickets $10 presale at Mosaic Bookstore.
