Arts Council of the Central Okanagan

Katie Brennan is a fantastic visual artist, friend of IWC, and President of the Arts Council for the Central Okanagan. When she came to IWC and said "Let's do something sweet together!" we could not turn her down. Without the generous support of ARTSCo, the madness of Springfield vs. Shelbyville would not be possible. Check out all the work they are up to around the Okanagan Valley and don't forget to nominate your favourite artists for the 10th Annual Okanagan Arts Awards in May.

I know you are, but what am I?

I know you are, but what am I?

We are so pumped for the big Springfield vs. Shelbyville Poetry Slam happening on January 27, 2017! Since our original call for poets in early November, we have selected the two teams, booked our venue and are eager to announce our wine and beer sponsors. Not to mention, if Rawle has his way, there will certainly be some kind of pre-show entertainment before the slam begins. It's going to be a killer night in Kelowna and it's only $10 through our Eventbrite campaign. Damn. This is almost as good as the Lemon Tree!

Kelowna Poetry Slam: Canada Day Throwdown - Meet the Poets

Jada Larkin

Jada Larkin originally hails from the ground of Windsor Ontario where he began writing a few years ago. Young to the medium, he quickly found his voice and style of delivery. A poet that aims to evoke empathy by pushing the boundaries of topics about humanity and self exploration and actualization. He utilizes strong diction and imagery to paint a vivid image of his words and strives to simply make you feel.

Jada took first place at Battle On the Hill and is a performer you don't want to miss! Cheer him on down at Kerry Park Stage, 6-9pm, July 1st.

Ricco Dicar

I fell in love with poetry after teaching the mechanics of it to my Grade 2 students. We investigated all the different forms of poetry and delved deep into the Haiku. After that I began to write my own as a model for the students. I enjoyed it from that day. The way chaos can meet organization and flow so eloquently after hours of polishing is quite astonishing. Its also satisfying to see a connection between artist and audience; hopefully inspiring others to express themselves.

Find Ricco down at Kerry Park Stage, July 1st, from 6-9pm!

Amanda Kelly

Amanda first came out of the poetry closet, three years ago at an IWC event and has been spinning words ever since. Poetry came as a sort of therapy when she was diagnosed with Epilepsy in 2013 and helps her make sense of the intricacies of life. Amanda’s poetry is curious about the messy relationships we have with our loved ones, society, the natural world and our own minds.

Kelowna Poetry Slam - Meet the Poets - Erin Hiebert

Besides having the COOLEST name of all the poets (haha), Erin has a sarcastic humour about her that will serve her well on stage on March 31st. She was an invited guest on our ShawTV show and proved to the entire collective that there is something witchy about her, (in the best possible way) and we can't wait to be under her spell once again.

Erin Hiebert is a 4th year Creative Writing student at UBCO. She has previously published a chapbook of poetry and uses her writing to examine femininity and women’s lived experiences.

Get your tickets now at Mosaic Books so you can get in early and enjoy some sweet beats and a little refreshment. All the details here.

Kelowna Poetry Slam - Meet the Poets - Leila Neverland

Leila is an enigma. One of those creators who can sing like Janis Joplin, play the keys like Bach, and write poetry like Shel Silverstein. She's a wonderful combination of revolution and absurdity. We are excited to see Leila rock it on stage as a poetess. Come see her perform on March 31!

Leila Neverland makes free-spirited music and poetry from her heart,
for the people. She is currently working on a new album, and hopes for
widespread peace.

Tickets available at Mosaic Books until March 31st for $10. Price jumps to $15 at the door. All tickets include one drink. More info here.
