Meet the (visiting) Poets - Natasha Kanapé Fontaine

Natasha Kanapé Fontaine is an Innu poet and multidisciplinary artist from the North Shore of Kebeq born in 1991. In 2012, she becomes one of the voices of Idle No More movement in Kebeq. She uses slam poetry to write and speak up about indigenous issues and protests, publishing four collections of poems, and performing as a performance artist, an actress in plays and television, and poet speaker in conferences and poetry shows. After six years of solo work, enjoying collaborations with artists from around the world, she now works with Maori artist Charles Koroneho in singing and performance duet. She currently works in solo and duet projects for the three next years. As protests, indigenous voices, walks and social movements were her favorite and main topics, she gazes now into traditional songs and Innu animism for the rebirth for social awakening.

Meet the Poets - Maddie Bishop

Things to know about me. Told Erin Scott I didn't like spoken word at age 15 (FINE. You WIN.) I look both ways before crossing a one-way street. Incredibly lucky when in life or death situation, incredibly unlucky when not. If I had to compare myself to a character it would be the dog from Up. My kindergarten teacher didn't like me. I shamelessly watch challenge videos on youtube.

Meet the Poets - Chase Wasilenko

Growing up in Kelowna 28 year old human and aspiring artist, never having any formal training and terrible school skills. I spend most of my time never finishing anything. My poetry is like a two way street. One street goes upward into the sky and writes beautiful words of progress and love the other road leads backwards to a dark past, filling holes with concrete as demons snicker and plants wither, everything is inspiration and expression of how i feel in the moments and whether or not i got to write it out. Come see Chase on Team Pop Feb 1!

Meet the Poets - Peter Navratil

Peter has competed before. And he always…uh…says things. He talks. He’s a talker. Words cannot describe Peter’s particular brand of performance poetry. But you will love him…or something else. Come see him February 1stat Milkcrate.

1) When did you first get started writing?

I wrote my first real poem

When out from the womb

There released a great tremor

And a hero did bloom

While this was occurring I was somewhere in high school taking spelling tests and learning about onomatopeia. It was probably around then.

2) Who are your favourite poets?

Sherman Alexie, Milo, Why?, Sabrina Benaim, your dog.

3) What are some inspirations, other than poetry, for your work

Sometimes I drink radiator fluid and watch the stars.

4) If you were a vegetable, what vegetable would you be?

If I was a vegetable I would be one of those vegetables that no one wants. The kind that you come and visit once but notice no flicker of life or see anything to give hope of it getting better. The skin is all wrinkly and off-colour, there are bruises from the smallest of abrasions, it is too weak to hold a meal of any sustenance, too old to spread the seeds. You agree I had a good life but when it is time it is time and you should just cut your losses and compost me.

5) If you were in Lord of the Rings, which character would you be?

You know that one orc when Merry and Pippin are being captured? In the chase just after Frodo and Sam peace out on their own? The one that says “What about their legs? They don’t need those.” And then that other orc guy yells “They. Are not. For eating!” Yeah, I would be that first guy.
